The Idea

Bring our mestre from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, to Washington, DC, to lead workshops in capoeira and samba for the local community to promote health and Brazilian culture.

The Specifics

Capoeira is an Afro-Braziian martial art that incorporates self-defense techniques, acrobatics, dance, and music into a sport and game that is appreciated by people of all walks of life. Oficina da Capoeira is one group of many that practice capoeira.

We will host a weekend of workshops in DC for people of all ages – though focused on local underserved youth – to learn from Mestre Ray, the internationally renowned top capoeirista in our group. With these workshops we hope to encourage more people to get active through capoeira’s unique, holistic practice: a physically demanding activity that also engages the mind through learning (1) a new language (Portuguese) and (2) how to play several instruments.

What a fun way to get healthy! Paying for a plane ticket from Brazil to Washington D.C. for the mestre to perform an acrobatics show is definitely is the best way to use $1000 to promote healthier communities! Boa Sorte!

Wow. What a fun way to get healthy! Capoeira sounds like a great thing to expose to youth -- how many people do you have attending your workshops?

We regularly have about 25 people in our classes (Monday and Wednesday nights and Saturday afternoons at Stroga in Adams Morgan). For the weekend of workshops with Mestre Ray, we hope to have about 100!
