Our schedules are becoming exponentially more chaotic every day with never-ending task-list and only a few breaks in our schedules that allow us to get outside or hit the gym. This idea aims to simplify the chaos by allowing members to simply log in on a website or their smartphone app and create publicly available events for all to see. Users can setup a pick-up soccer game with a time and location, or a long run with a starting point and publish the event for anyone interested in joining. Users can also privately specify workout buddies and times so that someone is always giving you that extra encouragement. The funds provided by GOOD will allow app/website development, and for marketing to communities of all sizes, everywhere.

Capoeira is an Afro-Braziian martial art that incorporates self-defense techniques, acrobatics, dance, and music into a sport and game that is appreciated by people of all walks of life. Oficina da Capoeira is one group of many that practice capoeira. We will host a weekend of workshops in DC for people of all ages - though focused on local underserved youth - to learn from Mestre Ray, the internationally renowned top capoeirista in our group. With these workshops we hope to encourage more people to get active through capoeira's unique, holistic practice: a physically demanding activity that also engages the mind through learning (1) a new language (Portuguese) and (2) how to play several instruments.

theMOVE would use the GOOD Maker grant to bring 50 more youth on trips with us this year, by making possible 3 additional farm workday trips with low-income groups. We organize trips from start to finish -- coordinating with local farms, arranging transportation, overseeing the work, running the reflections -- and we do so with folks that usually can't afford to pay for the cost of the trip. We also heavily outreach within our local communities to find folks who have never thought to step out onto a farm before. As a young organization, we're building up our pool of resources to ensure that these opportunities are available to all.

The mission of Sol Food Mobile Farms (SFMF) is to serve communities in their own backyards! By recognizing that every community has a unique set of resources and skills, SFMF hopes to provide a meaningful gardening experiences for every site they visit. We hope that by providing workshops at no cost to schools and community centers we can empower the younger generation to be involved in their own food systems. In addition, we hope that these immersions in community gardening will foster an appreciation for healthy foods and nutrition. This money would fund the supplies for an entire garden in one of the eight cities we plan to visit, which includes soil, lumber, seeds, and tools.

GNYDA will adopt bodegas (i.e. small corner stores) in the South Bronx and will enroll the bodegas in NYC Department of Health’s Healthy Bodega program. We will partner with the bodega owners to ensure they do not incur financial losses from devoting shelf space to healthy foods instead of candy and chips. Our Registered Dietitians will provide bilingual recipes, cooking demos, and workshops to help maintain a demand for fresh produce and other nutrient-dense foods. We will partner with local schools and community groups to distribute coupons and incentives for the healthy items sold at the adopted bodegas. Through this initiative, our bodegas will be a source of delicious, nutritious foods in a neighborhood.

With the funds from this challenge, we hope to continue Literacy for Little Ones into 2012 and expand the program to more hospitals in Central Wisconsin, so every family can experience the love of reading! Approximately 1,500 families have been impacted, over 100 volunteers have gotten involved, and our goal is to increase both of these numbers. Other goals include creating a website, to inform the community of how the project is going, and establishing an elementary component to guarantee the love of reading sticks with children throughout their life and to teach them the importance of volunteering as well.

$1000 will allow us to purchase and install an air walker exercise unit in a high-need local park, selected in cooperation with city officials and community partners. We will then conduct demonstration sessions showing park-goers how to use it. Air walkers allow users to mimic a walking or a jogging motion, like an elliptical machine. These outdoor machines are eco-friendly and easy to maintain because they require no electricity, are made from durable steel, and designed to withstand all weather conditions. They are fun to use, and will promote a culture of health in communities that disproportionately suffer from obesity and may have limited access to traditional fitness centers.

The funds would be used to buy groceries for the course and provide each student with a custom bag of recipes and enough food for a week's worth of meals. This grant will allow us to contribute local and organic food to the program and introduce cooking in a fun, healthy and cost effective way to the at-risk youth of Los Angeles. Students will also learn knife skills and how to properly read ingredient labels. The program will commence in the spring of 2012 at the Glassell Park Rec Center. The 6 week course will meet once a week for 2.5 hours. We will provide chefs and nutritionists so the students have all the tools they need at the end of the course to share what they have learned with their families and continue their culinary education.

We want to pair up child care providers with mentor Master Gardener and Master Food Safety Adviser volunteers. We have a large pool of trained volunteers capable of offering experience hands-on-assistance to providers that have the desire to use Gardening as part of their program for the children they care for and the parents they work with. We would recruit providers and match them with volunteers. From sowing sees to harvesting the volunteers will work lp them with the providers and children to learn how to garden and include fresh produce into their diets. Volunteers will work with the providers and children throughout the season to help them identify weeds and troubleshoot. Children will then learn to add veggies into their meals.

The Kids Fit Foundation and Dan and Jackie from the hit reality show "The Biggest Loser" are headed to Centennial Middle School to help over 1,500 kids become active. Three months prior, the students will be giving a training program and actively training for the mile run during the event. By the end of the event, each child will have ran a full marathon and receive a t-shirt and medal in recognition for their accomplishment. This teaches them that fitness can be fun and rewarding - and that you don't have to make the football team to be an athlete! These funds would make this life-changing event a reality!

Girls on the Run is a life-changing prevention program for girls in the 3rd-8th grade. Our program creatively integrates physical training for a non-competitive 5k with lessons that encourage girls to recognize and honor their individual strengths and talents and to celebrate their inner selves. During the 5k girls will have the opportunity to demonstrate their physical and mental strength while running alongside their families, friends, coaches and community members. These funds are needed to cover costs associated with organizing the 5k (permits, rentals, police coverage, snacks) so we can provide an inspirational, fun and memorable experience for all who participate.

If my classroom had a window, you would likely see the majestic Rocky mountains. Due to budget cuts felt at public schools everywhere, our students don't get to look out windows and they also don't get to experience the mountains! The mission of Girls Outside is to promote the promise in all young ladies by revealing their personal power to create the future they deserve through positive choices. We believe that quality outdoor experiences for and by girls provide the opportunity for participants to discover the heart of who they are through a balance of Physical Challenges, Emotional Growth, Community Stewardship, Goal Setting and Self-Reflection. We target 9-12th graders who have demonstrated at-risk behaviors and detrimental choices.

Funds would be used to purchase small equipment (balls, jump ropes, etc.) and to advertise to the community to come join in the fun!

On December 9, 2011 we hosted a Get Healthy Mother/Daughter Workshop that included health, safety, and fitness through self defense. Over 50 participants learned self defense techniques in an inclusive environment. Based on participant feedback a self-defense class is a need and desire in our community. We plan to have 3 month sessions that meet once a week for 1.5 hours. The participant capacity for each session is 25. The class will be held at the YWCA Pasadena-Foothill Valley in our Multi-purpose room. Prior to starting the class each participant will be asked to sign a liability waiver. We will supply a healthy snack and water during each class. Mwalimu Kamau will facilitate the course, he is a trained martial arts instructor.

Provide the coaches and the equipment to run an 8 week program that meets once a week after school for one hour. Coaches come prepared to each class to run fun, engaging fitness activities that all kids will love and benefit from. Activities will focus on general fitness vs. a specific sport to develop all muscle groups in each child's body and to develop a wide array of skills that will help children develop into better, stronger, faster athletes. Take metrics on children's physical performance to show improvement over the 8 week period. Metrics include a 40 yard dash, med ball toss, broad jump and agility test. Kids will enjoy many of the physical, social and mental benefits associated with participation in sports and fitness activities.
